In less than an hour a plane will take You from Moscow to Nizhny Novgorod - the third largest (after the capital and S-Peterburg) city in Russia: a million and half people live in it.

In 1612 Nizhny Novgorod peoples volunteers corps with Kusma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky at the the head contributed to the utter defeat of the foreign intervention. In 1812 the city gave refuge to many hundred of Moscovites who had left Moscow after Borodino battle.
In 70s the city became "famous" all over the world because academician Andrey Sakharov was exiled here.And in 80s here spread the democratic mavement which put to the government of the region young reformers with Boris Nemtsov at the head.
In contemporary conditions there were clearly defined the main directions in the development of Nizhny Novgorod economy: the convertion of the defence plants and scientific-research institutes,the creation of the joint enterprises with foreign partners and privatization of the state property The successes achieved on the way to the privatization in Nizhn y Novgorod draw a great interest not only in other regions of Russia,but abroad as well.
Visits by Margeret Thatcher and the prime minister of Great Britain John Major, the ambassadors of Germany, France, Japan, Holland and other countries testify to it.
Scientists of Europe and America are attacted by a great intellectual and creative potential of the city which is one of the largest scientific centers of Russia. Here there are 14 hign educatuional establishments,several institutes belonging to the Russian Acdemy of Science, about 10 scientific-research institutes and project-design bureaus, carrying out works in phisics, chemistry, radio-electronics and so on
Tourists coming to Nizhny Novgorod are interested in it as a cultural center. There are several theatres in th city: a theatre of Opera and Ballet (which has been on tours to some cities in Europe, a Drama theatre,a Comedy theatre,a Puppet theatre ( a participant of international competitions) and a Philarmonic society with simphony orchestra which has been a grea success on tour to Spain,France and other contries of Europe. The choir of boys under the leadership of professor L.Sivukhin is famous all over the world.A great popularity has gained by Sacharov festivals of arts to which outstanding misicians from abroad come to Nizhny Novgorod.
Our city is the motherland of Maxim Corky.Here there are preserved a number of houses where he lived, to begin with "Kashirin house", which is the museum of Gorky's chilhood, and finish with the last flat in Kirshbaum's house, where Gorky 's whole family lived and which is the memorial museum now.
The guests of the city are also interested in historic archtectural museum- reserve which is one of the best in Russia in richness of its funds; the Art museum in which there are collected more than 10 thousand pictures of outstanding Russian artists of XVIII-XX centuries (I.Repin, K.Brullov, N. Kramskoy, A.Savrasov, I.Shishkin, V. Vasnetsov, V. Serov, N. Rerich, and otyers); literary memotial museum after Nickolay Dobrolubov.There is also a museum "in the open air", where there are collected pieces of Russian wooden archtecture.
Nizhny Novgorod land is rich in domestic art craft: carving and painting on wood (the famous Khohloma, Gorodets, Pavlov maiden painting), embroidering in goid ,treatment of metals and clay, bone lacing, making toys. The creations of people's art are presented in expositions in museum of domestic art craft.
Nizhny Novgorod province is well-known for its neighbourhoods.There are the piligrimage places for fashionable person and religious person. Bolshoe Boldino is connected for ever with the name of famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. A special,saint place on Nizhny Novgorod land there is the village of Diveevo with Seraphim-Diveevo nunnery where the relic of the saint Seraphim Sarovsky's body lie.
